About Mobility
Mobility management is a key function of GSM and UMTS networks that enables mobile phones to operate seamlessly. Its primary purpose is to track the location of subscribers, ensuring that calls, SMS, and other mobile services are delivered accurately. GSM and UMTS networks, like all cellular systems, are built on a radio-based structure consisting of multiple cells, each served by a base station.
Each base station covers a specific geographic area known as a location area. By combining the coverage of multiple base stations, cellular networks are able to provide wide-area connectivity. In GSM networks, the base station is referred to as a Base Transceiver Station (BTS), while in UMTS networks it is called a Node B. A collection of base stations is grouped into what is known as a routing area.
